The dandruff, what's that ?

It is a condition of the hair and scalp. Almost 50% of the world's population is affected. Dandruff is small fragments (flakes) of scalp that break off, spreading through the hair or over the shoulders. It is caused by excessive scaling of the scalp.

What are the symptoms of dandruff ?

Scaling is the main symptom, but in the more severe forms you may experience :

  • Dry scalp
  • Démangeaisons
  • Scalp tugging
  • Redness
  • Irritation

Factors favouring the appearance of dandruff :

There are two types of dandruff :

1. Dry films

The dry or simple films are grey, white and can be easily removed.

2. Oily dandruff

Oily, thick, yellowish dandruff is associated with seborrheic dermatitis, an inflammatory skin condition.

In both situations, a microscopic yeast called Malassezia furfur is involved in the excessive scaling of the scalp and the appearance of dandruff. This yeast causes irritation of the scalp and an excessively rapid renewal of cells. Studies show that the quantity of Malassezia is multiplied by 2 in case of dandruff.

In other, rarer cases, the presence of dandruff is due to psoriasis.

Possible developments and complications :

Dandruff is benign. Many people with dandruff complain of its social impact, so it is important to find a treatment to eliminate it.
However, when caused by seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis, dandruff will tend to recur.

Hair dandruff treatments

1) Anti-dandruff shampoo

In the majority of cases, regular use of this product will solve the problem. Sometimes these shampoos usually contain an antifungal agent, a keratolytic and soothing agents to combat itching.

2) Cure of food supplements

Food supplements based on horsetail, biotin, vitamin c, vitamin D and zinc such as REBORN's Hair & Nails cure will strengthen the hair but also play a role in seboregulation, thus reducing dandruff episodes.

3) Scalp massage

Massaging the scalp with certain oils (aloe vera or coconut) stimulates the scalp and hydrates it.

4) Beware of helmets and hats

Indeed a prolonged wearing of these 2 last ones strongly supports the production of sebum and prevents the scalp from breathing and will thus support the appearance of dandruff.

5) Seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis

In these cases, consult a doctor for appropriate medical treatment.
